Great Hearts Anthem | Prep (Grades 6 -12) Summer School 2023

Classes are subject to change prior to May 12 depending on teacher availability and enrollment

Summer school courses are designed to help students develop fundamentals and prerequisite skills for academic success. Students will receive an evaluation and recommendation regarding readiness for the upcoming school year.

  • Course Guarantee: All course offerings are dependent upon satisfactory student enrollment. Great Hearts Anthem reserves the right to cancel any course offering due to insufficient enrollment. All enrollees will be given at least one week’s notice and be refunded in full.
  • Homework: Homework may be assigned to strengthen student understanding from each class meeting. To cover the essential concepts of the course, instructors will clearly communicate student expectations in this area.
  • Dress Code: Students must wear their school uniforms to summer school. Summer school is open to all Great Hearts students. Students are required to conform to standards of behavior and dress code, outlined in the Family Handbook (click this link). Students who attend from other Great Hearts schools may wear the uniform of their school. New students who do not have uniforms yet may wear a solid color burgundy or navy polo shirt and khaki pants or shorts.
  • Lockers and Snacks: Students will not have access to lockers during summer school. Students may bring a snack to eat during break time, but it should be kept in their bag until that time. Snacks are not provided by the school during the summer; please be sure to send snacks with your student if they need them during the day. A water bottle is recommended daily.
  • Pickup & Drop-Off: Students may be dropped off at school at the east entrance early as 15 minutes before class time. (Please do not go through the Front Office). Students must be picked up no later than 15 minutes after their course ends. If a family needs a student to leave class early, a parent/guardian should notify the teacher in writing at least 24 hours ahead. Students will not be released from class without parental notification. For students that will walk or ride their bike, please notify the Summer School Director via email.
  • Students with Allergies and/or Medications: Please note that you must provide the Summer School Director with any medication (clearly labeled with name and instructions) prior to your child attending the first day of their summer school class. Students will not have access to the front office or health assistant.
  • Behavior: Students are expected to behave in a manner consistent with the behavioral expectations of the Great Hearts Anthem as outlined in the Family Handbook. Please click the link and review the policy. Students removed from a class or activity for disciplinary reasons will jeopardize their continued enrollment in the program as well as their registration fee(s).
  • Important: Confirm the dates and times before enrolling your student. Middle School Students who enroll for both Latin and Math can email Ms. DeSilva for a code to receive Prep for Prep course at no cost.

Academic Course Offerings

  • MS Math Refresher: June 5th-June 23rd, Monday-Friday. 10:45-12:30 PM.
    Great Hearts Anthem Prep is a full year ahead of most district schools in mathematics curriculum, to the level that our 8th graders receive high school credit for Algebra. This course is designed to help incoming middle school students feel prepared for for Introduction to Algebra in 7th grade or HS Algebra in 8th grade.

    Target Audience: any returning students going into 7th and 8th grade who need a refresher, or all new 7th and 8th grade students who would like to catch up on the curriculum. Cost: $250
    Included Materials: Math Textbook/Workbook (Carnegie Math: Middle School Course 2)

 

  • HS Algebra Refresher: June 5th-June 23rd, Monday-Friday. 10:45-12:30 PM.
    Our advanced math curriculum includes Advanced Algebra and Trigonometry in 10th grade and Calculus in 11th grade. This course is provided to help students be better prepared for the concepts taught in advanced mathematics. Target Audience: All high school students who would like a refresher before entering Algebra II/Trig (10th) or Calculus I (11th)Cost: $250
    Included Materials: Math textbook and handouts.

 

  • Introduction to Latin: June 5th-June 23rd, Monday-Friday. 8:50 AM-10:35 AM.
    At Great Hearts Anthem Prep we pride ourselves on embracing the classical tradition that includes the study of Latin for all of our students. This summer course is available to provide a foundation in Latin for students who need to feel ready to dive into Latin II and Latin III in 7th and 8th grades.

    Target Audience: any returning students going into 7th or 8th grade who need a refresher, or all new 7th and 8th-grader who would like to catch up on the curriculum. Cost: $250
    Included Materials: Latin Textbook (Lingua Latina)

 

  • Prep for Prep: June 5th-June 23rd, Monday, Wednesday, Friday. 8:00 AM-8:45 AM
    Great Heart curriculum can seem like a daunting challenge for some families. This course is designed to make the transition to our school easier by helping students navigate techniques to keep on top of studies.

    Target Audience: all incoming 6th graders, and all new 7th and 8th graders. Cost: $100

Enrichment Course Offerings

  • All the Small Things – Art Enrichment: June 5th-June 23rd, Tuesday and Thursday. 9:00 AM-11:00 AM

In this summer art enrichment course, students will create a series of miniature acrylics, watercolors, and gouache paintings.  We will focus on drawings and paintings of landscapes, clouds, and vegetation, all from life; both plein air and in the classroom.

Target Audience: Prep students with any level of art experience.

Cost: $200
Included Materials:  watercolor paint and palette, acrylic paint and palette, charcoal, liquid masking fluid, masking tape, mini canvasses (students may supply any of these items for themselves if they desire)

  • Drumline and Rhythm – Music Enrichment: June 6th – June 22nd, Tuesday and Thursday, 08:00 – 09:30 AM.

    Great Hearts Anthem Prep already offers music theory, history, and learning basic music composition throughout the school year through its understanding of traditional liberal arts curriculum. This course is designed to take these same basic principles and focus more on rhythm and the percussion of the marching band. Target Audience: Any students entering 6th – 8Th grade and 9th – 12th grade.
    Cost: $150
    Included Materials: Rhythmic Worksheets and Pattern Material and all Sheet Music
    Student Supplied Materials: Marching Drumsticks/Mallets, and a Practice Drum Pad.

 

  • Creative Song Writing and Acoustic Guitar – Music Enrichment: June 5th – June 23rd, Monday and Wednesday Morning From 08:00 – 09:30 AM.


Great Hearts Anthem Prep already offers music theory, history, and learning basic music composition throughout the school year through its understanding of traditional liberal arts curriculum. This course is designed for those that enjoy creative writing and poetry but want to do more with that creative ability. In this course not only will we work on lyrics and song writing but also the basic elements of acoustic guitar and composition.

Target Audience: Prep students with an interest in song writing and composition.

Cost: $200
Included Materials: Rhythmic Worksheets and Pattern Material and all Sheet Music
Student Supplied Materials: Pen/Pencil and Note Pad. (If you have an acoustic guitar, bring it.)
